My imagination ran wild as I dreamed of what it would be like to live in an actual boxcar, wash my dishes in the stream, and pick wild blueberries! As a family we have shared this book together a few times, always begging for one more chapter. Now that my kiddos are becoming independent readers, they want the ability to read this and other favorites on their own. I always let them try if they liked, but knew that it was above their current reading levels. Recently, we were given the chance to review The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set by Albert Whitman & Company. My sweet daughter was thrilled that now she could read these books all by herself!

If you have been around the blog for any length of time, you know that my kiddos are gifted with dyslexia. While we view that as a blessing, because their minds work in unique ways, it can make reading or learning to read extra difficult. We have used several different methods hoping to find something that would help each specific child. Daemen is the one who still seems to be struggling. Imagine my surprise when I found out that we were going to get a chance to review PRIDE Reading Program! Because of his struggles we were encouraged to start with PRIDE Yellow Book Program Kit- Level 1.
PRIDE Reading Program can work for any child. It's multi-sensory approach through Ortho-Gillingham method which makes it especially helpful for children with learning struggles like dyslexia.

The Kit that we received included:

The Student Workbook- This is a spiral bound workbook that contains pages needed for the many activities in the program from reading and dictation, games in the back, even the back cover is utilized during the week.
Sound Cards- These are the phonetic flash cards with both single and blended sounds represented on them.
Letter Tiles- (and a handy bag to keep them in) This are thick cardboard squares that represent the same phonetic sounds as the sound card and are utilized in several different activities. They come in a sheet and you have to punch them out. **I want to insert a piece of advise here. I allowed Daemen to just punch them all out while I looked through the rest of the materials. I wish I would have waited and only punched out the ones that I needed immediately. Even though there is a bag to keep them all in, I ended up putting the currently used tiles in a ziplock inside that bag. When I need new tiles I have to dig through the bag. Just would have made things easier on myself.**

Also included are a personal size white board with red and black markers and an eraser, a reading tracker, ink pen, a game dice, and a carrying bag for all of it to store in nicely.

Also my favorite part is the online teacher's guide with script that walked me through each lesson step-by-step.

I wish I could have had access to this program with all 3 of my kiddos as they were learning to read! It is such a well rounded way of teaching. Daemen has had a major jump in memory of sounds that were a struggle for him before. The repetition and multi-sensory learning had him enjoying reading lessons!

We worked through 3 units a week together which allowed us to accomplish one lesson per week. The one thing that I did find was that there were times that I had to split up the units for Daemen. There were times that he was tired and easily distracted by the time we got to the dictation pages. When I split them up, he was better able to focus and his handwriting was much neater.

Daemen's favorite part: He loves the time that we get to spend one-on-one together each day! It has actually become pretty special to us both. His favorite activities ware the games that we play in the back of the student workbook. They help make the learning fun! He also enjoys building the words with letter tiles (which he also turns into a game).

My favorite part: I love so many things about this program! Of course, I love getting special time with Daemen each day. I also love the way that I can keep it all together neatly. I really appreciated the scripted teacher's guide that made my part so much easier! I am thrilled at the progress that my sweet boy is finally making in reading. It has always been so difficult for him and he wanted to learn so badly. To finally have a program that is working for him and helping him gain confidence is priceless!

I am always looking for fun new ways to learn with my kiddos. When we found out we were getting the chance to review Let's Go Geography, I knew that we were going to love it! Let's Go Geography Year 2 is a fun, interactive way to learn geography. This 32 week program had my creative kiddos excited "explore" different countries around the world!

Let's Go Geography is an online homeschool geography curriculum for K-4. (However, my almost 6th grader enjoyed it almost as much, if not more, than my younger 2). The lessons are in PDF format that you download and use from your computer. These lessons are neatly organized to take all the 'work' out of learning with your kids.

Each lesson takes about an hour to complete. We chose to split the lessons into 2 days to be able to focus better and allow for ample time to be creative. The lessons are split into 6 chapters that include:

Chapter 1: Map It!

This is where we identified which continent we were visiting and then which country. We colored our maps and learned which countries touched the one we were studying, it's capital, and if there are any oceans or important waterways connected to it.

Chapter 2: The Flag

In this chapter we learn the flag of our current country, color our flag, and then attach it to the "Flags of..." page that coincides with the continent that we are currently studying.

Chapter 3: The Music

This is where you will find links to the national anthem of the country being studied and other songs that are part of that culture.

Chapter 4:Let's Explore

This turned into one of our favorites and was one of the reasons we chose to split our lessons into 2 days. My kiddos loved getting to virtually explore, though linked videos and pictures, the country we were studying. It is filled with interesting and fun facts.

There are also links to read more online, Dewey decimal number to find books on your country at the library, atlas reading from DK's Geography of the World Atlas, and a journal prompt. This chapter is also how I made this curriculum adaptable for my older student!

Chapter 5:Create

This would be the other reason we had to split into 2 days! My creative children LOVED this part. It included coloring pages (sometimes with videos) and a craft with step-by-step instructions.

My favorite part:

I actually have 2 favorites on this review! First, all the leg work is done for me! This was a huge time saver for an already busy mom trying to juggle homeschooling 3 kiddos! Second, Organization! Seriously, the entire first lesson is making a notebook to keep all the maps, flags, color sheets, and crafts and organizing it. There are dividers for each continent that are color coded. The best part, each child made their own! My husband and I loved seeing the kids' personalities come out in their notebook covers and dividers!

Let's Go Geography has a 3-year schedule. Each year starts in North America and then moves through countries in South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and finally, Antarctica exploring new countries each year. The kiddos loved that they were going to study every continent every year. I think it helped to keep their attention and make learning more fun. Year 1 and 2 are both currently available with Year 3 in production! You can choose between either 2-year access or lifetime access.

After 2 weeks of battling the worst sickness that I have ever dealt with, I am having a time trying to get reorganized and re-motivated. I literally feel like I have lost 2 weeks of my life. Somewhere in the middle of the 104* temperature and coughing, I had a birthday. It passed without me even acknowledging it...and now, I keep forgetting how old I am! For real, I had a moment yesterday where I forgot that it was January. YOU GUYS! This is not a normal feeling for me! I like lists and organization. I like structure and routine. I do not like not knowing what day it is let alone what month!

Anyway, here I am trying to make sense of my blog and reviews that are upcoming. I know that I had planned so many post ideas, I wrote them down, and they are somewhere in the house...I think if I find them I may have some kind of reminder or pretense of order again. Until then, please excuse my crazy long absence and my short posts.

I do want so badly to be back writing and sharing on a regular basis, and I will be...eventually. I am realizing that I am going to have to give myself some grace. I can only get so much accomplished in 24 hours. My sweet children have been such an amazing help through this time, and I know that they need some extra mommy time snuggles and love right now as well. Their world, that is usually full of routine, was super disrupted. It will take us all time to reestablish some kind of order to our world.

It leads me to a question: How do moms, with kiddos in public school, navigate the 2 week holiday break? I know that my kiddos are struggling with the loss of their routine and we aren't super structured. How do children, who are used to the structure of public school, survive the long break? How do their moms? Gives me some perspective, teaches me a little about grace, and makes me grateful that I am finally well enough to get back into the swing of things!

I pray that your holidays were wonderful and that you are all healthy! I'll be back to regular posting soon.Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-57064874021855793242020-01-08T20:17:00.000-06:002020-01-08T20:17:35.809-06:00SchoolhouseTeachers.com- A Review

I am so excited to share with you our very first review product of 2020! We were given the privilege to try out the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership by SchoolhouseTeachers.com This is a all-in-one homeschool site. You can find classes for all ages, grades and learning styles. However, it is so much more than just classes. It also has great resources for parents including planners, menus, and e-books (just to name a few). There are so many great resources available for one flat rate per family!

The first thing I specifically wanted to check out were some electives for Conner. He already has most of his basic classes this year, but needed some extras. I showed him the variety of topics that he could choose from:

He immediately asked to look at the Bible choices. He found a great Bible Study for Preteens. They even had a boy version, which made him really happy! He loves being able to study something specifically made for him. I love that there were lesson plans that helped me to help him stay on track!

We were also able to find him a Music Theory 1 class that he is enjoying. I was able to print him off a check list that helped him to be a more independent learner. I chose to highlight 5 days at a time to help him to see the different squares better. It has been a game changer in our house!

I allowed Daemen to also be able to choose a couple of classes to try. My intent was honestly independence...however, he had other ideas. He immediately asked for a coding class! Even though this class was created for 7th-12th grade, we gave it a shot.

We only made it a few lessons in before it lost us completely, but our time together was worth it! He loved getting the chance to try a class, and I loved that he had the option to try it without worrying if he could or couldn't do it. All of the classes are included so you are able to custom your child's curriculum based on where they are in each subject and what they want to learn!

Daemen chose a Bible class as well called 'A Different Kind of Bible Study.' It is a video based Bible class also has science elements included. He absolutely loves it! It did not take long before Emy decided to join him for this class! Listening from across the room, Conner told me that he was going to do this class next!

I could not wait to start sharing Friday Foodie each week. I have missed this space. And yet, here I am absent again, except there is a reason. First off, I am so sorry that I have missed 2 weeks of sharing all the things with you. Our household has been hit with the flu! This is the first time in years that we have been sick. Let me just say, I did not miss the sickness at all! These weeks have been rough, but thankfully, God is our great Physician and we are on the mend!
That being said, I will be back to my regular blogging schedule next week! I'm looking forward to showing you our latest journey and sharing about my first experience with tofu!

I pray that you are all healthy, and I will see you on Monday!
Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-31591877982323485232020-01-01T00:00:00.000-06:002020-01-01T00:00:01.540-06:00Wordless Wednesday- Sisters!

For my first Friday Foodie post I wanted to share what has become one of our new favorite meals: Falafel! If you had told me a year ago that my family would actually eat this dish, much less that it would become their favorite, I would have laughed at you. However, here we are!

I found this recipe on Pinterest. I drew inspiration from Minimalist Baker and Pure Ella. Both of which had great recipes that I was inspired by, but I also chose to use gluten free panko and Daiya parmesan cheese in my recipe.

I think this is one of the prettiest meals that I have made in a long time. Also, one of the only meals that never has leftovers! That is enough for me to continue making falafel for my family. Another big bonus is this is an affordable meal for a larger family!

My final recipe:

2 cans of chickpeas
2 Tbsp of juice from canned chickpeas
2-3 cloves of garlic
Gluten Free Panko bread crumbs
1 Tbsp potato starch
4 oz of Daiya Parmesan cheese
2 tsp turmeric
2 tsp cumin
1 Tbsp dried Parsley
1 Tbsp dried Cilantro
1 tsp salt

I mixed all the ingredients (minus Panko) in my food processor until a textured. Then I added Panko until it was dry enough to form into patties.

I heated a cast iron skillet on medium heat and added a drizzle of oil. I then cooked the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned.

I served mine on a lettuce wrap with avocado sauce, diced tomatoes, and chopped red onions on top.

The Avocado Sauce Recipe:

3-4 avocados
1/2 c mayonnaise
1 tsp of lemon juice
salt to taste

I pureed all the ingredients in my food processor and chilled for a few hours.

This is actually a very filling meal. There are cheers all around when I tell the kiddos that we are having Falafel (they call them chickpea fritters) for dinner. I must confess that I flopped this meal a couple of times before it was perfected because I tried to cut corners or forgot to add the potato starch. I hope that your family enjoys falafel as much as mine does when you decide to give it a try!
It has been such a challenge for me to find yummy food, that my family can enjoy, that are within the bounds of our food allergies. For those of you who don't know, about 2 years ago we found out that 3 of the six people living in our home are gluten sensitive and that another 3 (some overlapping) are allergic to dairy. It was a shock to say the least, one that set me on a journey to relearn how to cook and bake.

These last 2 years have seen their fair share of failed recipes! (I am still searching for a bread recipe that is both affordable and tastes good.) However, along the way, I have branched out to try foods that we would have never tried before. Some of these recipes have become staples in our home and I thought that I would share them with you here once a week.

I feel that I need to also let you know that I have found that increasing plant based foods and limiting my meat intake to 2-3 times a week, has greatly reduced my inflammation and leaves me feeling more energized. That being said, I am in no way a vegan! I actually really love meat, but have learned that self-control is very important for my health and ability to be a mom and wife. The recipes that I will be sharing with you will be a mix of vegan, vegetarian, and traditional dishes that are all gluten and dairy free.

Next week I will begin a Friday Foodie series where I will share a recipe with you that we are trying. I will post honestly: the good, the bad, and the failed (and I am sure there will be fails). I hope that you will join me as I continue to navigate cooking healthy food for my family!Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-75906826796447151392019-12-11T00:00:00.000-06:002019-12-11T11:09:56.545-06:00Wordless Wednesday- Finding Fun

If not let me give you a brief overview:

The concept of a Morning Basket is something that I first learned about through Pam Barnhill. It is simply the time of day (doesn't have to be morning) when the family gets together and learns certain subjects together, regardless of age or 'grade.' You can add anything that you would like to your families basket. It really is as unique as you and your family!

It took me far too long to get on the Morning Basket Train. In fact, I bucked the idea for years. I am not even sure why. I love teaching all of my children together one room schoolhouse style. If I were to be really honest, like brutally, I hated the idea of reading chapter books out loud. I don't know why, I just did!

Within the last year, we needed simple. We were moving from our spacious house to a 300sqft travel trailer while we began remodeling our new home. I knew that there was no way that I was going to fit all the books and things that I thought I needed for homeschooling. So, we went back....to Five in a Row. It is such a beautifully sweet curriculum that uses quality picture books to teach all the various subjects. It was during those weeks that I begin to truly love reading to my kiddos.

I also found tons of research about the benefits of reading aloud to even your older children. I knew that I needed to get past the chapter book phobia that I had acquired and truly embrace this time! And so I created our very own Morning Basket!

Now, our basket time isn't always in the morning, but it is something that we have all grown to love. We look forward to the time when we come together and read. It is constantly evolving to fit our current needs or lessons, and it is a perfect way to engage the kiddos in really good literature and biographies that they may not have normally chosen to read!

Here is a glimpse at what is currently in our basket. Please note that these books are always on loop, ever revolving. and fit what works for our family.

The books include:
Lessons In Yeshua's Torah- This is our morning devotional. It has our weekly memory verse, plus breaks down a reading for each day from the Books of the Law, the Prophets and the New Testament. It also includes color pages, handwriting pages, and activities to go with each week's lesson.
Christian Liberty Nature Reader- We use this for nature study and science. I love that it teaches from a creation standpoint. We have learned to find beauty even in a wasp building her nest!
Heroes Then and Now: Mary Slessor- These books have my heart. I want my children to understand the sacrifice that was made so that they have access to the Word of God freely. I want them to see that other countries do not always have that privilege. These books do not sugar coat the sacrifices made by missionaries to tell others about Jesus! We use these books to help us remember that when God calls us to do something that it isn't always easy.
Little House In the Big Woods- Seriously, who doesn't love Laura? We actually began watching the TV show first which lead to the kiddos requesting that I read the books!
Castle Diary- For history this year we are studying the Medieval time period. The boys wanted to learn about knights and lords, castles and battles. This book is a daily 'diary' of a young page during the time period. I love finding books like this that make history come alive in their minds!

That's all! Some people add art or foreign language, others geography and music theory. The possibilities are endless and really able to custom to each family. In fact, your basket could and should look very different than ours! It can start with simply one book that you read together everyday. Make this time work for you! The important part (at least as far as I am concerned) is simply being together, reading and learning together: However that fits into your daily life!Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-33472452711944821392019-12-06T00:00:00.000-06:002019-12-06T08:23:51.526-06:00We're Back With Exciting News!A few months ago Conner came up to me and asked about 'that thing where we tried new homeschool stuff and got to tell other people about it.' He was referring to our time on The Homeschool Review Crew back in 2016 and 2017. I knew that I missed getting to try new products and sharing those products with all of you. However, I always thought that it was a burden on my kiddos. They were constantly trying out new ways of learning and new products. I was afraid they were tired of the changes, and had convinced myself that it wasn't 'good for them.' (whatever that meant)

After taking some time to talk to the other 2 kiddos and Thomas, I began to pray about whether or not to pursue joining the Crew again. It wasn't too long before I knew my answer and, even better, before the applications came available. On October 2nd I decided to fill out and submit my application. During the wait I really wanted to be more active here. I wanted so desperately to post 2-3 times a week, but life!

Imagine my surprise when the email came inviting me back to join the Crew for the year!

I am thrilled and beyond grateful for this opportunity! I get to, once again, try and share new curriculum and products with homeschool moms. My passion has always been homeschooling and helping other moms know that 'yes, you can homeschool your kiddos too!' I want you to know that I will do my best to give you honest reviews of great products that will help you in this journey of homeschooling!

I hope that you will follow along as I continue sharing our journey of life. I am planning to share about building a homestead, adoption, eating healthy around food allergies, and now, once again, homeschool! I am so glad to be back. I have missed this part of my life so much!
On one hand, I am so excited to finally have sweet little A in our home. On the other, all the big emotions! To say that adoption emotions are complex would win the understatement-of-the-year award. The exhaustion that follows these emotions makes me understand why some moms experience post adoption depression the way bio moms experience postpartum depression. This is hard!

I'm grieving the loss of her first family while being excited that she's finally here. Add to that being fully aware that this is not yet permanent....my head is swirling and my heart is aching. I'm learning to lean on my heavenly Father in ways I never knew before. My faith has been and is being stretched with each new day that I walk this journey out.

Daily, I'm being reminded that "His grace is sufficient for me and His power is made perfect in my weakness. "(2 Corinthians 12:9 my paraphrase). I'm learning to "trust Him and not lean on my own understanding of current circumstances" (Proverbs 3:5-6 again, my paraphrase).

This year, my word was growth. I knew there would be growing pains and hard moments. Nothing could have prepared me for all this.....this hard! And yet, here I am walking, one day at a time, sometimes blindly, this path that God has placed before me.

I do not know what the final outcome will be. I cannot even guess or say that I'm hoping for one outcome over another. I just know, that whatever happens over these next few months, I know Who is in control! I'm praying His will, in every area of this journey, be done.
Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-34368114679025363212019-11-07T06:13:00.001-06:002019-11-07T06:13:09.575-06:00Not Too Much Longer! There is so much that I want to share with you. So many moments that have touched my heart in this journey to adoption. Right now, living it in real time, it's hard to put everything into words. This journey had stretched my faith in ways that I never dreamed possible. It has seen both loss and relationship. Even though I still don't have a guarantee of how this journey is going to end just yet. I know that, because of this precious little girl, our lives are forever changed for the better!

I can't wait to share with you more of what's been going on here! It won't be too much longer!Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-65790266156425169302019-10-30T12:01:00.001-05:002019-10-30T12:01:15.431-05:00Wordless Wednesday- Still Waiting

Even today when I read it, I feel the raw emotion all over again: Baby Fever.
I cannot believe that it has been 6 years since I wrote that post. Life has been busy and full since that September night. I have cried out to the Lord many times about that very subject. I decided that I should revisit this and share an update.

I don't exactly know when things began to change. I can't pinpoint an exact moment where Thomas came to me and expressed that he too had regrets, but that is exactly where he landed! The Father moved in his heart and changed it to match the desires of mine! My prayers had been answered!...but now what?

We weren't sure what would come next on this journey. We began to pray for direction. We wanted to move forward, but not ahead of God! We wanted more children, but only in His timing and in His way. Neither of us were sure what that even looked like...

This past March we packed up our 2100sqft home and moved our now family of 5 (Bailey has moved out and is in college) into a 350sqft travel trailer on 7.5 acres while we remodeled a house. We were so excited to provide our 3 younger kiddos with the childhood we longed for them to have. One where they could explore creek banks, climb trees, and simply be in and among creation!
Little did we know that on June 17th we would get a phone call that rocked our world, answered our prayers, and set us on a journey that would grow our faith in ways that we never dreamed!

There was this little girl that my sister-in-law had been fostering, whom we all loved, that was in need of a forever home. Now, because we are family and already had a relationship with her, the court appointed mediator was asking us if we would be interested in adopting her.

**Insert deep breath**

That day still plays in slow motion in my mind. Here I was 6 years after I prayed that prayer staring an answer in the face, but the obstacles, the road blocks, the red tape....the unfinished house! How would we ever get it all finished in time? Could we?

I remember the prayers that I prayed that day. I remember the nerves. It is all etched in my mind permanently. Could this really happen? I certainly could not see a way. I am so thankful that none of this, except choosing to say YES, was up to me!

The next few months were filled with court dates where words like termination, permanency, and transition were used. Of course, nothing is ever simple in the world of adoption where the very word is born from brokenness and loss. I grieved for my daughter. I felt helpless and selfish all at the same time. I longed for this process to be over and the house to be finished. I didn't want to wait or have to feel all the feelings that were involved.

That was until the day that I was reminded that this sweet girl didn't ask for any of this! She didn't ask for foster care, or court dates. This amazingly precious child, the one that I have grown to love with every ounce of my being, deserves someone to fight through the hard for her, to feel the hard for her, to walk this journey, regardless of the outcome, for HER!

So next week, we will walk into a courtroom and fight through the hard, for her! I pray that this will be a day that is celebrated. A day where she is placed in our home for trail adoption. I know that it could be the day that the judge says 'No' and we must begin to process a loss that is completely out of our control. With this kind of adoption, there is just no certainty of knowing.

However, of this I am certain, that I serve an Almighty God! He has asked me to walk this road. So today, I will take the next step in faith, knowing that He will catch me if I fall. He will be there in the hard, in the raw emotional moments! He never fails! I cannot walk this path alone, and though there are still times that I pray for Him to give me strength or take away this pain...this hard, I must remember:

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV) "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me."Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-29358387128472036302019-10-02T08:55:00.000-05:002019-10-02T08:55:39.415-05:00Wordless Wednesday- Nature Exploration

I have spent the summer praying over beginning this journey of writing about our days again. There is so much going on in our world and so much time has passed. At some point I'll back track and fill in some gaps. Until then here are some thoughts from my heart to yours!

Hours turn into days,

Days turn into weeks,

Weeks into months.... and so time passes and before you realize it the years add up. Suddenly, you look around and your children are all reading, writing, and exploring independently.

Where did those precious years of reading Five In A Row books and creating hours of fun with arts and crafts? They have been exchanged for chapter books and nature studies and watercolor journals. Those days that I spent overwhelmed wondering if my children would ever read, if I was enough to teach them the building blocks that they needed to learn, are becoming a distant memory. These days are spent full of learning together about herbs and plants, searching the creek banks for the newest hatched tadpoles, and listening to the chickadee that warns us as we venture too close to her nest.

I'm not sure exactly when the tides turned. I do not remember the first day that I realized that I was no longer their primary teacher. I just woke-up one day and understood that I had become an assistant to them, helping only when asked. This may very well be my favorite season so far. I love watching them grow and learn on their own. They each have their own ideas and goals for life which are directing their learning! It's such a beautiful time!

Don't get me wrong, there are still struggles. We still have formal reading and math lessons. We still struggle with habit training and loving our neighbor. I just know that these are life long lessons that can take years to teach and instill. (I should know, I'm still the student to these lessons!)

I write this as an encouragement to other mommas out there. I see you! This journey of being a mom, teaching our children it's not an easy one, but it is so worth it! Keep fighting the good fight! I will leave you with 3 verses that are repeating in my head as I write this:

First, Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

Trust Him mommas! He cares more about those precious children of your than you do (as hard as that may be for you to comprehend)! Even though you struggle, commit your teaching journey, your mom journey to Him. He is so faithful! He will not let you down, He will direct your steps down these paths that you have been called!

Second, Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) "Train up a child in the way that he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it."

He has given us instructions to train up our children. If He gives instructions, He will give grace and wisdom and strength to carry out those instructions. Just lean into Him! He loves you so much, dear momma! Allow Him to be your strength as you faithfully carry out the task at hand.

Finally, Galatians 6:9 (NKJV) "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."

I know that this job is exhausting, the sleepless nights, the constant training and redirecting. It can seem never ending! This verse is such an encouragement that we will reap a harvest for our efforts! Keep teaching them, training them, loving them, and trusting the Father to give you strength for the journey! Don't lose heart! Remember the famous quote by Gretchen Rubin:

"The days are long, but the years are short."

This season will not last forever! Enjoy it, embrace it, and cherish every sweet moment! Before we know it, these will be memories in both our minds and the minds of our children! What do you want to look back and remember? Begin creating that life today, right now! Go on, go build a fort, search the creek bank, read a good book (remember to do the voices), teach them about God and His unfailing love! Create those memories that you will both cherish!

It had become rigorous, controlled, forced. The tears were almost daily and my relationship with my children was suffering. I missed the fun and play. I longed to see their eyes light up with wonder over a new discovery again. I missed seeing the excitement that came with learning what they were curious about. Somehow, I had allowed everyone else's opinions take over my homeschool. I lost track of the fact that the Father had given these 3 beautiful children to me for a purpose. I was supposed to raise them the way He was leading, not the way the homeschool family on Facebook or Pinterest was doing things.

This awakening was hard. I felt exhausted. Here I had spent the last 3 weeks planning the 'perfect' year. And yet, in that moment, I knew that the perfect would not be and the stress would resume. The tears would be a daily occurrence again. No! This had to stop now! After talking with Thomas that evening, I knew things had to change, and he was totally on board!

The next morning I began to pray that the Father would lead me in leading and raising these children of His that He entrusted to me for such a short time. I longed to make every moment linger. I dreamed of painting, exploring, reading and watching documentaries together again. I knew this was my wake-up call (again)!

What does this mean for our 2018-2019 school year? What curriculum will I choose? How will I incorporate all this? Well, friends, I am not entirely sure. This is all unfolding as I am typing. Here is what I am currently looking at:

1. We are returning to our first love: Five In A Row!

Seriously, how did I allow this to leave in the first place?!? We love the books, the art, the exploring! This is our favorite way to discover a rabbit trail that we can chase. I'm bringing it back. I have already ordered several new books from the lists. We will once again travel through rich stories in picture books that my kiddos love. I even found this great blog that paired chapter books with each of the FIAR books so that Popper can still be challenged in his reading while getting to enjoy the activities as part of our together time! He is thrilled! Many of them have been on his wish list of books to read!

2. Throwing out the math book!

How liberating is that! Math causes tears. However, board games, card games, dominoes do not! In fact, my boys learned math facts in an hour playing a card game with Daddy than they had in a year of flash cards or worksheets. Also, I have discovered that my boys love logic puzzles. I am searching and reading reviews on several options that will allow them to use these for math instead!

3. The Good and The Beautiful Language Arts

There is nothing else to add! I was skeptical at first, so I chose to print off the free lessons first. (YES! It is really free!)

AMAZING! Best of all, the kiddos love it: the gorgeous art, the short lessons, the recommended books, all of it! And they are all becoming better readers while learning how to spell and write! It takes about 30 minutes to complete and they get one-on-one mommy time during their lesson! It is seriously an win-win-win!

Other than that, I am still searching. I am piecing together and trying to rediscover balance. I want them to be exposed to great books, music, art, and Bible. But I also want them to explore and follow the rabbit trails of learning. There is a balance there somewhere. I am praying that the Father will reveal to me that perfect balance for our days and weeks. Until then, I can be found exploring, painting, building forts, and reading great books with my kiddos! We are learning to love learning again!Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2435990738873883657.post-71493390995174490312018-01-26T10:14:00.002-06:002018-01-26T10:14:32.614-06:00A Whole New World. It's that season, at least that was the excuse that I was telling myself as Sister became sick and wasn't seeming to get better. I was at a loss. I didn't want to run her to the doctor, especially with the flu being at an all time high, for it to be a virus that needed to just run it's course. She was drinking plenty of water and still eating. I just oiled her up and made sure that she was sleeping.

She slept well. Except that my independent girl was now ending up in my bed every night. I didn't understand what was going on. And so, 2 nights ago, when I was awaken at 3am with Sister crawling into my bed again, I began to really pray. I pleaded with the Lord to give her healing and me wisdom (James 1:5) as to what to do for my girl. I just didn't have a peace about going to the doctor yet.

The next morning, or later that morning since sleep never came, I knew what I needed to do! Daddy T and I loaded all the kiddos up and went to the chiropractor. I believe that a good adjustment will help bodies be able to better fight sickness. Then, I made a decision that I never dreamed that I would make, I took my whole family to a naturalist doctor.

Now, I know the whole crunchy term should imply that, but if I am honest, this process of becoming crunchy still had its limits for me. This was one of them. See, I believe in doctors and antibiotics, when needed, I also believe in all- natural when able. A naturalistic seemed extreme to me. I am so thankful for my time in prayer that morning as the Lord was able to prepare me for the series of events that were about to unfold.

The doctor was AMAZING! She was patient, kind and really listened to me! She saw us all quickly and commented on the overall health of our family. However, there were a few concerns: food allergies.

I already cut out artificial dyes and MSG. Lately, I have been avoiding dairy like the plague because it makes me fell awful. However, nothing but lots of prayer and processing could prepare me for the news:
Sister is allergic to: wheat, corn, dairy and sugar!

This explained so much. Here I was feeding my daughter the very stuff that was making her sick to begin with: yogurt, sandwiches, granola bars, etc. Stuff that I believed was healthy, and for most is, but it was making her ill. I was in complete shock! What now?

A whole new world has been handed to me. I am researching and digging trying to learn. I have decided to take you along with me on this journey. I feel like this is where the blog originated, learning to be more crunchy, and that is exactly where we are now.

So, I invite you to join me, learn new recipes with me, share your favorites, and pray together as we navigate this world of shopping and cooking for our families! Michelle Crunchy Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15812772513242645558noreply@blogger.com0
